I am happy to announce the finishing of my Prince “Rest In Purple” painting and the release of the signed numbered prints. This has been a tough year for legendary musician deaths starting with Merle Haggard, Lemmy, David Bowie, and now Prince. Death is obviously inevitable but is much more shocking when it happens to soon and even more tragic when it’s due to a drug overdose. This seems to be happening way too often in the music industry lately. Unfortunately I never got to see Prince perform. I love his music and being a child of the 80’s I grew up listening to it! Prince was actually out here in Arizona during the Super Bowl a few years ago and performed at the Marquee Theatre. Tickets were around $300 and sold out fast. Scalpers and resellers were getting $600 to $800 for them! This was way too expensive for me and I did not get to see him. Prince is a musical genius boasting the ability to play 27 plus instruments on all of his albums. Not only did he play all the instruments on his albums, he was the producer as well. This is a feat that even other great musicians have not done. Michael Jackson had Quincy Jones, the Beatles had George Martin etc. Even more impressive is the fact that he didn’t make the same album twice. Throughout his discography he would reinvent himself with new sound and style album after album. Prince did whatever the fuck he wanted! He had no concern for what the fans and critics wanted and more times than not it worked out beautifully. That is the sign of a true artist. Artists take risks and when It comes down to it they are creating their vision weather that is through music or painting. I was very sad to hear the news of his death and knew immediately that I would have to paint something in his honor. I wanted to do a thoughtful piece that captured him without it being just a self portrait. When Doves Cry is one of my favorite songs so I added a mourning Dove to his signature Prince symbol guitar with a gender bending purple lace background. I hope that my Prince Tribute painting “REST IN PURPLE” does his life and legacy justice and bring viewers the joy and memory of his music. One beautiful thought is that he created thousands of songs that have not even been released yet, enough to release an album a year for centuries to come so presumably Prince’s music will live on far longer than us. RIP Prince “Rest In Purple” prints on sale now. For $60 each.
